When Wheelhouse Ceramics student Meaghan McCarthy approached instructor John Riccio with the idea of hosting an Empty Bowls event to benefit Foothill Unity Center, he said “great, you’re in charge!” Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement to aid hunger relief through ceramics. A studio produces bowls, then hosts an event where they’re sold and filled with a simple meal — in this case, ice cream. Meaghan set a goal of $5,000. The studio held three open days when anyone could come in and make bowls. (Those with no experience were taught to make hand-built bowls.) Several ceramic artists also donated pieces to be raffled. “The community definitely made this a successful event,” said Meaghan. “It was very rewarding to see everything come together.” Huge thanks to her and everyone who participated!
