Disha Ramanujam is a high school student and the founder of Period Liberty, a non-profit organization that specializes in bringing menstrual items to those in need.

Her mission is to destigmatize menstrual poverty by educating the community while providing necessary menstrual products. She believes these products are just as necessary as food and water, yet society doesn’t actively spread awareness about it.

She states, “The main obstacle has been people’s uncomfortableness with the subject and the way we counter is that is by talking about it more and allowing them to participate in those conversations.”

One of her inspirations for creating her organization was her friend aiding her in times of need.

Disha said, “I misplaced stuff a lot and I don’t usually have period products on me so I will have to always ask her for one and she always brings some for herself and other people. I asked her once, ‘You’re always so prepared to give people menstrual products, even if you don’t know them’ She told me it was because she grew up in a low-income area and menstrual products were one of the hardest things to access at the time and if anyone else is in that situation I want to be able to provide for them as other people have done for me.”

With that being said, her passion to help women in need is the inspiration we need to uplift our communities.
