Yang, originally from China, immigrated to Los Angeles with his family. With no income and low resources, Yang remembers looking at his 15-month-old baby and feeling incredibly anxious due to his circumstances. With no time to waste, his need to provide for his family helped him find his way to the Foothill Unity Center.

Yang shared, “I still remember that my wife and I walked for half an hour to the Foothill Unity Center with our son in our arms. The cart distributing food filled our backpacks. My wife and I held our sleeping son and carried him slowly. Two bags of food. After we got home, we counted them one by one. This food was enough for us to eat for a week.“

With Foothill Unity Center’s weekly food distribution, his family was able to receive nutritious vegetables and protein. Yang said, “ In China, there is a saying that ‘food is the priority for the people.’ After overcoming the anxiety about hunger and income, I have more energy to do other things. I have the arms and legs and the will to do more.”

Remembering the support provided to Yang and his family, he shares how he will volunteer at the food bank. Regardless of his language barrier, Yang feels the need to give back, share his story, and pass on his goodwill and hope to others.
