May started volunteering at Foothill Unity Center 5 years ago after she retired. She wanted to be of service to her community. May expressed, “I wanted to do something useful, and it seemed like a good opportunity to help people.” Working at Foothill Unity Center has enabled her to speak to her family members about the importance of having gratitude for the things they have. “Growing up I thought my family was poor, but I should have been so appreciative then,” she shared.

Since then, May has interacted and fed many people who come through the center’s doors. She wants people to know that every individual has a story, and we should try to see the humanity in every person. May states, “If we interact with them one-on-one, we can see who they truly are as a person.” Working with Foothill Unity Center has taught her to have more compassion for various groups of people.
