Deborah and Brian had always been community-minded, dedicating their lives to helping others. They were introduced to Foothill Unity Center 15 years ago since participating in Temple Beth David’s Annual High Holidays Food Drive which collected non-perishable food items for the center. Deborah said, “Foothill Unity Center has always been a first-class and local organization. It makes us feel good to participate as well as be part of the neighbors’ helping neighbors concept.”
As they approached their 50th wedding anniversary party, Deborah and Brian reflected on their lives together and realized that in their “golden years”, they were more focused on downsizing than receiving gifts. They didn’t want their friends to worry about what to get them; instead, they wanted to celebrate their milestone in a meaningful way.
So, Deborah had an idea: instead of gifts, they could ask guests to bring non-perishable food items to Foothill Unity Center. They included this request in their invitations, hoping it would resonate with their friends.
On the day of their celebration, Deborah and Brian were thrilled to see their friends embrace this concept. Many brought bags of food, while others contributed checks. The amount collected exceeded their expectations and filled them with joy. Brian happily shared, “This is a nice and easy thing to do.”
This experience reinforced Deborah and Brian’s belief in the importance of community service. It was a powerful reminder that many people in their neighborhood struggle with food insecurity, often unnoticed.
By celebrating their love in this way, they not only honored their journey together but also made a positive impact on those in need. They are proud to support Foothill Unity Center and grateful for the opportunity to give back as they continue their journey together.
