Alka Kumar has been working with Foothill Unity Center for more than 6 years, driven by her mission to provide vision for all. Motivated by her father’s influence and her desire to give back to the community, Alka and her husband dedicated one day each week to researching how they could establish an organization specializing in eye care. Within a year, they successfully launched Anugraha Drishtidaan, an organization that offers affordable eye care services, including eye exams, prescription glasses, and eye procedures, to low-income families and homeless individuals.
They brought their eye clinic directly to Foothill Unity Center to identify any underlying eye issues among their clients and provide prescription glasses to those in need.
When asked about her commitment to offering eye care at a low cost, Alka shared a touching story, “There was a lady who hadn’t had an eye exam in 30 years. She expressed her gratitude, saying, ‘Thank you, I’ve never had an eye exam. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.'” For Alka, the most fulfilling aspect was providing opportunities to those who were unable to access help on their own.
Furthermore, Alka goes above and beyond by organizing public vision talks. These vision talks feature specialized eye care doctors who share their knowledge and insights on various topics related to eye health. Alka explains, “These talks are open to the public, enabling them to gain knowledge and awareness about general health issues and understand the intricacies of eye-related conditions.”
Since partnering with Foothill Unity Center, Alka has transformed the lives of numerous clients who were either visually impaired or in need of eye care. Her dedication and efforts have made a significant impact on the community she serves.
We are grateful to partner up with Anugraha Drishtidaan and be able to connect our clients to an organization that shares our passion for ensuring equal access to healthcare for all.
