An Overview of Services Provided in 2016

At no cost to the family, Foothill Unity Center, Inc. served more than 4,500 low-income families representing more than 8,000 individuals of neighboring communities, specifically, Altadena, Arcadia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Bradbury, Duarte, Irwindale, Monrovia, Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena.

Basic Needs

  • Provided a total of 47,483 client services that included food, health, & social services
  • Delivered 519 food boxes to Homebound seniors and disabled individuals who are sick and/or shut-in
  • Registered 1,063 children for Back-to-School with access to uniforms/clothing, backpacks, haircuts and more
  • Registered 790 families to receive bountiful Thanksgiving Dinner food boxes and registered 1,063 families at Holiday in preparation to make a festive meal; distributed new toys, clothing, and much more for 1,372 children
  • Issued 4,972 bag lunches/meals to Homeless men, women and children
  • Issued 6,609 Bus Tokens/Taxi Vouchers/Foothill Transits to remove transportation barriers
  • Connected 2,280 people to additional services in their areas through the Information and Referral program
  • Helped individuals and families become housing-ready, secure permanent housing, and provided move-in and eviction prevention assistance for families experiencing housing crises

Health Services

  • Conducted 407 Dental and 327 Vision Screenings for children at Back-to-School
  • Partnered with USC’s Ostrow School of Dentistry to provide comprehensive dental treatment and education for 92 children through the Mobile Dental Clinic, completing 1,649 dental procedures valued at $114,205
  • Provided Eye Exams, Glasses, and Eyeglass Vouchers for 1,011 adults and children
  • Coordinated care for 427 health needs for the homeless & uninsured through Medical Outreach and Referrals
  • Increased health accessibility by providing 94 Free Flu Vaccines; 643 Glucose/Diabetes Screenings and 886 Blood Pressure Screenings
  • Provided 6,717 health services for adults and children including exams, screenings, referrals, and more

Volunteers, Staff and Interns/Work Experience

  • The Center’s staff consisted of only 21 full and part-time employees and 2 AmeriCorps’ Duarte’s Promise Fellows
  • Dedicated volunteers, trainees and interns execute much of the hands-on activity required to run the Center’s service delivery — and essentially provide the capacity to meet the basic needs of the community
  • 6,008 volunteers, ranging in age from 3 to 93, from neighboring schools, faith-based organizations, businesses, service & government groups contributed 40,166 hours of their time, energy, respect, and love
  • Work-experience programs increased staff’s capacity with 10,737 job development hours from youth, adults, seniors, and disabled adults
  • Continued as a community training site for 16 nursing students pursuing licensure; enriched field training for 6 social work, 4 human services, and 3 public health interns

Additional Accomplishments

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program prepared 253 individual federal and state returns that generated $273,948 back into communities
  • Maintained volunteer run Pet Food Bank to help clients feed their cats and dogs
  • Connected 302 households with Free Lifeline cell phones through outreach at weekly food distributions
  • Maintained and enhanced Food and Nonfood Donor Relationships with over 100 vendors

A Community Effort

As the Community Action Agency for the Foothill Area, we are spokespeople for the hidden poor, the very low-income, and the working poor. We have become a necessity to sustain the basics, and consider it our position, with community support, to understand and help meet the needs of the underserved.
